Clearspace Grid Generator Using the Wrong Component | Gridit

Your Clearspace Grid Generator may use the wrong component for the clearspace calculation.

This can look like:

  • The full logo or logotype being used instead of the logo mark
  • The clearspace appearing much larger than expected
  • The Invert Component switch not making the logo mark the clearspace reference (“X”)

Why this happens

This usually happens when the logo components are not separated correctly inside Adobe Illustrator.

The generator reads logo components based on their structure and layers. If the logo mark and logotype are grouped together or placed on the same layer, the wrong component may be detected.

How to resolve this

Solution 1: Try the Invert Component switch

First, try using the Invert Component switch.

This changes which part of the logo is used as the clearspace reference.

If the clearspace still uses the wrong component or appears too large, move to Solution 2.

Solution 2: Separate logo components into different layers

Logomark and Logotype on separate layers in Adobe Illustrator

To increase the chances of the generator correctly identify each component, try placing the logomark and logotype on separate layers.

Make sure the logomark and logotype are not inside the same grouped layer. You’ll know they are fully separated when each layer displays a different colour in the Layers panel.

Place:

  • The logo mark on one layer
  • The logotype on another layer

Then run the Clearspace Grid Generator again.

This helps the generator correctly identify which component should be used as the clearspace reference.

Solution 3: Generate in a new document

If the issue continues:

  1. Create a new Adobe Illustrator document
  2. Paste only the required separated logo components from Solution 2 into the new file
  3. Generate the Clearspace grid again
  4. Copy the generated result back into your original document if needed

Important to know

  • This is usually caused by the structure of the artwork, not the tool itself
  • Complex or layered logo structures can affect component detection
  • Separating components into different layers resolves this in most cases
  • Illustrator sometimes needs a reset to read logo components correctly
